Secco draws a geographic and political portrait of the Valtellina and the Valchiavenna valleys along the Swiss border, areas hotly contested by the Duke of Milan and the Bishop of Como. They were the scene of violent conflicts between Catholics and Protestants during a long period of German migration into the region. Also mentioned is the ongoing dispute amongst the contiguous Swiss cantons over possession of this territory.
